Tropical Rural Sanctuary, Built For The Wild in Bonville
Poul & Kelly had just finished building their dream home but quickly discovered their landscape was less than desired leaving the property extremely exposed to passers by and in constant stress caused by their cheeky dogs and ancient Tallowood gums sucking up all nutrients and moisture from any new plantings. We worked with them to develop a hardy, lush and private sanctuary that borrowed from nearby Bongil Bongil national park. We have now maintained this garden for going on 3 yrs including tending to Poul & Kelly’s vegetable garden.
Integrated water management — developed a considered drainage strategy and dry creek bed to capture and direct runoff while supporting water-loving planting such as tree ferns.
Major soil improvement — working with trusted drainage partners we removed heavy bentonite clay, improved drainage and installed a gravel soaking bed beneath quality topsoil.
The result — a lush, resort style sanctuary that balances hardy classic landscape plants with unexpected native details.
Poolside privacy — densely planted the entry and pool zone to create a secluded, lush retreat.
Naturalistic verge — transformed the verge beneath established Tallowwood gums, discouraging parking while complementing the surrounding landscape.
Inspired by Bongil Bongil National Park — drew on the natural character ofthe nearby landscape, using deep-rooted grasses and Doryanthes suited to challenging conditions.
Bold, simple planting palette — combined Xanadu, palms, Burrawang cycads, Native Hoyas, Native Viola, Native Alocasia and gingers for a rich tropical character.
