Tough, upright native sedge with fine, bright green foliage and attractive bronze-brown flower spikes in spring and summer. Excellent for water gardens, revegetation projects, and low-maintenance landscaping.

Carex appressa – tall sedge, native sedge

APPEARANCE: Perennial clumping sedge with narrow, arching bright green leaves. Produces tall, slender stems topped with bronze-brown flower spikes, followed by small seeds that attract birds.
ORIGIN: Widespread across Australia in wetland and riparian areas.
USE FOR: Pond edges, water features, mass planting, erosion control, and habitat gardens.
CLIMATE: Hardy in most climates; thrives in moist to wet soils and tolerates periods of flooding. Frost and coastal tolerant.
PLANTING: Prefers full sun to part shade. Plant in moist or boggy ground, or at the edges of ponds and streams. Can also be grown in regular garden beds if watered well.
CARE: Low-maintenance once established. Trim back old foliage to refresh growth. Water well in dry periods if grown out of water.
MATURE HEIGHT & WIDTH: Approx. 0.6–1 m high x 0.6 m wide.
