Stenocarpus sinuatus – firewheel tree

APPEARANCE: Medium to large evergreen tree with a dense crown. Leaves are dark green, glossy, and often deeply lobed when young, becoming more entire with age. Produces dramatic red-orange flowers arranged in a circular “wheel” shape during summer.
ORIGIN: Native to the subtropical and tropical rainforests of New South Wales and Queensland.
USE FOR: Feature tree, large landscape plantings, attracting nectar-feeding birds, and creating a tropical or rainforest feel.
CLIMATE: Best suited to frost-free or light-frost areas in warm temperate to tropical climates. Prefers a sheltered position when young.
PLANTING: Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained, fertile soil. Mulch well and apply slow-release fertiliser for natives at planting.
CARE: Water regularly until established (approx. 12 weeks), then moderate watering during dry spells. Minimal pruning required—remove only dead or damaged branches.
MATURE HEIGHT & WIDTH: 10–25 m high x 5–8 m wide, smaller in cooler climates or under pruning.
